Greetings from the Grid. Yes, it is true after a billion years, TRON Lightcycle Run will finally start operation April 4th 2023! If you aren’t familiar with TRON Lightcycle Run, it is a cloned attraction that is currently at Shanghai Disneyland. Also it was to open in time for the Walt Disney World 50th Celebration. Now ironically it is opening when that ends, but I go into all that.
From Disney’s site, “The story of TRON Lightcycle / Run picks up after “TRON: Legacy” where Kevin’s son, Sam Flynn, has opened a second gateway into a digital realm called the Grid. The first of these portals he created is found at Shanghai Disneyland with the original TRON Lightcycle Power Run.“
Over the past couple of months, TRON Lightcycle Run has been testing, and even lit up at times. It looks incredible, and I cannot wait to step on the Grid. The seats are like the Flight of Passage seats where you straddle the seat with a restraint that comes up behind you. Then you start off in the Grid inside a show building with a climax that takes you outside for a grand tour of Tomorrowland.
Our video below gives you an up close look at TRON Lightcycle Run. This was taken during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Tomorrowland Speedway comes very close to TRON Lightcycle Run, however we think it is unfortunate Walt Disney Imagineering didn’t take this opportunity to re-imagine Tomorrowland Speedway. In Shanghai Disneyland, TRON is situated in a spot where it is the star of Tomorrowland, however in Walt Disney World, it is tucked away behind Space Mountain and Tomorrowland Speedway.
How to Experience TRON Lightcycle Run
Now Disney did not offer up details on how the lines will work for TRON Lightcycle Run, but we have some thoughts on that. While we are not a fan of the Virtual Queue, we are 99.999999999% sure that this will be deployed to welcome TRON to Magic Kingdom. We also believe with the same certainty that this attraction will roll out as an Individual Lightning Lane (ILL) attraction. You can read about Virtual Queue & ILL here.
Also worthy of note is there was a mention of Annual Passholder Previews, and Disney Vacation Club Member Previews. I would expect those announcements to come sometime in the next month.
While we prefer traditional lines over Virtual Queues and ILL, we do understand the thinking behind using them for new attractions. Stay tuned to our blog for all things TRON Lightcycle Run as we get closer to it’s opening. See you on the Grid! Are you excited? Let us know in the comments.
