Nestled away in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom is Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen (Skipper Canteen for short). More times than not people will tell you that “Be Our Guest” is the can’t miss dining reservation at Magic Kingdom, but Skipper Canteen is well worth a visit. If you are a fan of the Jungle Cruise then this is an absolute can’t miss experience as they managed to capture the attraction inside this restaurant.

Just like the skipper effortlessly enhances the already unique experience of the Jungle Cruise, the restaurant is filled with delightful nods to the attractions. The decorations transport you into the vibrant world of the Jungle Cruise, creating an immersive dining environment. Some may even refer to it as the JCCU (Jungle Cruise Cinematic Universe); okay, maybe we are the only ones to call it that.

Skipper Canteen, The Food

Skipper Canteen offers a delightful array of culinary delights inspired by the world-famous Jungle Cruise attraction. The menu showcases a variety of exotic flavors and dishes that will take your taste buds on an adventure of their own. From the creatively named “Lost and Found Soup” to the mouthwatering “Tastes like Chicken, Because it is,” each dish embraces the playful spirit of the Jungle Cruise.

Alright so how’s the food you ask? We have been here on four separate occasions and it never disappoints! The following pictures covers several visits to Skipper Canteen. We will even give you a couple of food reviews on our favorites.

Mess Hall Fried Rice

Orinoco Ida's Cachapas
Orinoco Ida’s Cachapas

Our stand out menu item is an appetizer named Orinoco Ida’s Cachapas. It is hard to put into words how good this is and we recommend you do not pass it up. House-made Corn Pancakes, Beer-braised Pork, Roasted Corn, Fresno Pepper Salsa, and Avocado Cream. The way these work together in taste is amazing and do not forget the Avocado Cream which is the light green blob things on the plate it is wonderful!

"Hardy Har Char" Siu Pork
“Hardy Har Char” Siu Pork

Another favorite is the “Hardy Har Char” Siu Pork, a glazed piece of pork served with rice and pickled vegetables. When eating this one, if you mix all of the items, it tastes like a bah mi sandwich, which is simply outstanding! The sauce on the pork is lovely and plays nicely with the pickled veggies.

Baa Baa Lamb Chops

The Baa Baa Lamb Chops is not our favorite dish as the meat isn’t very tender each time we have tried it YMMV. The presentation is excellent, and the sauce that comes with it is also tasty, but twice, we didn’t enjoy the meat.

Additionally, your skipper should let you know about some items not listed on the menu, or as they call it, the not-so-secret menu! Each time we have visited, the Brazilian Cheese Bread has been off the menu but is available and highly recommended. This is the same bread we mentioned in our Food and Wine article.

Next time you find yourself on the outs of advanced dining reservations at Be Our Guest, take a peek at Skipper Canteen, or as the app names it in very long Disney fashion, “Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen.” It is worth your time to stop by and eat the adventure! Just be careful of any dish with ginger because she snaps, anyway! Please let us know what you think in the comments.
