We had our third maze announcement for Halloween Horror Nights 31 (HHN 31). The Horrors of Blumhouse! We delayed our post on it as we had not seen either of the movies, and wanted to check them out to gauge whether or not they are maze worthy.
The two movies that will be a part of this maze are “Freaky”, and “The Black Phone”. We are fresh off seeing them both yesterday, so we feel we can give thoughts on how this maze could translate.
Typically we are not fans of putting two properties into one house. The previous Blumhouse mash up mazes have featured many different movie properties, and let’s face it they haven’t always lined up with each other. Sinister was squeezed in with Happy Death Day, and The Purge for instance.
Both of these properties showed up in the latest 2 speculation maps which you can read about from us in these two articles, speculation map V2 & speculation map V3.
To Recap: What type of event is Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) you ask? It is an event aimed at teens and up. I wouldn’t suggest young ones to visit this event as the crowd can be a bit rough. There is plenty of alcohol being served and also graphic scenes from horror movies being played out in the park. The event happens on weekends during September and October which is the Halloween season.

Blumhouse Freaky
First up is “Freaky” this movie was a lot better than either of us expected. It isn’t a masterpiece but it held our attention, and was somewhat unique in doing so. In short, this is about a urban legend slasher who is at large, and ends up grabbing a cursed knife that has special powers. Ultimately he uses this weapon on a teenage girl, and instead of her being fatally wounded, they switch bodies. There are some unique death scenes that we fully expect to see in the part of the maze from this movie. If you haven’t seen it and have HBO Max you can find it there, and you should give it a watch.
Blumhouse The Black Phone
We are fresh off seeing “The Black Phone” last night, and what a great movie this was. Full of suspense, and a very unique story it will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way. Ethan Hawke plays a kidnapper from the 70s, and really his performance, and the setting they put us in really gave us a good sense of what it felt like back then. The story is about Ethan’s Hawke’s character AKA “the grabber” snatching up little boys in the 70s. The main kid star (Finney) who we follow through the story ends up in his clutches.
There is no doubt that this movie will be great as a maze in Halloween Horror Nights, to that point we feel it could have been a solo maze. Without spoiling the movie too much you could easily tell a great story through a maze and have some good scares while doing it with this property. All I know is there better be some black balloons around!
Conclusion on The Horrors of Blumhouse
So how will these two work together you ask? Well I for one hope that they start with “Freaky”, and end with “The Black Phone”. “The Black Phone” does a great job at building suspense with a good ending arch that really will fit into a HHN maze, whereas “Freaky” is more of a “Happy Death Day” vibe, meaning it is a bit more silly than fearful with some clever and cheesy slasher scenes. See you all in the fog! What are your thoughts? Are you excited to see either of these properties? Let us know in the comments!
